Frownies

Not just a cutesie facial expression.*

If you know me in real life then you’ve undoubtedly heard this story before. Sorry. I love attention, so I’m repeating it on the Internet. I have no shame.

My dear little Aussie is something of a professional escape artist. He loves nothing more than to have a quick run down to the beach – with or without me. Luckily, he’s been taught to pause and look both ways before crossing any street. I’m serious. It’s an excellent skill/trick.

So the other morning I found myself chasing after my little Houdini. In my pajamas, fuzzy slippers and Frownies still on. What’s a Frownie, you say? Oh, just the best anti-wrinkle treatment ever. But mostly, it just a big ol’ glorified stamp that’s glued to your forehead and the outside corners of your eyes. (You should really just Google them, I seriously love them.)

All of this is not so bad. I’ve definitely done more embarrassing things in public. Here’s the thing though, I live by the beach. A beach where handsome sun gods, aka surfers, flock to. In droves. Now, as I made my way down to the beach, in my pajamas, I noticed that my sweet little dog has stopped. Well, not exactly stopped. He’d been caught. By a seriously handsome surfer. At this point I should mention that my pajamas in the summer are made up of a t-shirt and a pair of ratty boxers that have almost no elastic left in the waistband and thus have a tendency to fall down if not gathered into a bunch on the side and held tight by either a hair elastic or an extra large safety pin. (Judge if you must.) The next few moments are forever engrained into my mind and went a little something like this:

Ridiculously Handsome Surfer Dude: Looks like you’ve got yourself a runaway.

Me: I know. Thank you so much for grabbing him. I guess he decided to go on his walk without me today.

RHSD: Haha. No problem. What’s his name?

Me: Sh*!head. I mean, Valentino.

RHSD. Cool name. My names Chad by the way…

Me: (Inner dialogue: oh god, I’m wearing my Frownies still, aren’t I? And I think my boxers are about to fall down.). Ugh…I have to go.

***Grabs dog by collar and hightails it out of there***

I often like to pretend my life is one fun Romantic Comedy. But as I get older, I realize it’s closer to an episode of Girls. Or worse yet, I am in a Rom-Com, but I’m not the star. I’m the zany sidekick who’s sole purpose is to create a laugh or two while everyone else is busy drinking wine and falling in love.

I think this story is precisely why I will never give up Carbs.

No Makeup, wearing a Frownie.

* In case you’re wondering what a cutesie facial expression is, wonder no more! Example – Looks like you’ve got a case of the frownies! It alludes to not only an expression annoying people say to an office (but usually substituting ‘Mondays’ for frownies) and it also refers to a facial expression in a cutesie/diminutive way.

There Went Peter Cotton Tail

Uh, what happened? It’s already TUESDAY night? I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that the days after a holiday are always a time to play catch up. But it was worth it. I had such a lovely weekend. Here are some photos…

Nothing says spring, or Easter, like tulips!

I may have borrowed Tino's ears

Don't you just want to squeeze his little cheeks?!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well!

Where I Brag About My Neighborhood Once Again

I know I’m a lucky gal. Extremely lucky, for that matter. Just about every single morning I wake up to the sound of seagulls. All I have to do is open a window and I can feel the ocean breeze waft in. And the ocean? I can see it from the front of my house. The beach is mere steps away.

Hate me yet?

It’s okay. But please take solace in the fact that I NEVER take for granted the beautiful surroundings I call home.

I think I take this same picture every single week. But I can’t help it, because every time my dog and I go for a walk (daily) I am blown away by the view.

If you live in San Diego, you probably know where this is (the Shack is a big giveaway). It’s not only my neighborhood, but it’s also the best beach in the area (totally biased). It’s a surfing paradise, yes, but the rocky terrain creates a unique beach experience. There’s a reason why it’s such a popular spot for engagement/family/wedding/you-name-it photo shoots.

Another reason why I love it? The sense of community. This is surprising in such a large city. But my neighbors really are the best. I already posted about our “neighborhood garden” (I have since met the green thumbs and they are wonderful!). And this week I finally snapped a picture of one of my favorite weekend treats:

Another kind neighbor! A cooler full of these tasty and refreshing drinksΒ  can be found on the sidewalk. I’ve happened upon these during the week AND the weekend. And I’m not going to lie, as I make my way back to the house after an hour or so in the sun, it’s the perfect cap to my little trek. Kind neighbors indeed! (Also, smart marketing?)

And now, off to enjoy another walk before work. Hope you all are enjoying the week as much as I am!

Heaven?

One Year Closer To Thirty

Not me. That would be Adam.

Yesterday, Adam’s mom and brother, Wes, came down to San Diego for the day. While Adam was slaving away at work, the three of us and the dogs (theirs, and mine) went for a long hike along the beach in La Jolla. The sun was shining, the water was blue and the weather was in the 70’s. It was glorious.

Of course, all of that walking tired us out.

Thank goodness we happened to walk through the village on our way home and especially the Public House.

$10 Trappist beer tasting? 1/2 off all apps? Don’t mind if we do!

With 40+ beers on tap, great daily happy hour specials and beer tasting every Wednesday, I can’t believe I have waited so long to visit! You better believe I will be back, and often.

Oh yah, we had a few nibbles too:

Steack and veggie bruschettas.

Um, at $5 a pop (happy hour price) these were a steal. They were soooooo yummy, and seriously filling. These aren’t your ordinary bruschetta.

The fun wasn’t stopping there. The birthday boy had to join us eventually πŸ˜‰

Off to Ocean Terrace!

We’ve got big appetites. Seriously.

It was Restaurant Week, so we went with the flow and did the pre-fixe menu. Adam and I have done the Restaurant Week thing many times over the years, but I have to say – Ocean Terrace was up there. It’s a great, casual, roof-top spot in downtown La Jolla. It’s especially lovely at sunset; the view is unbeatable. For Restaurant Week, they offered their entire menu with a few of the entrees available for a small, additional price ($3-5). Honestly, the four of us could have split 2 pri fixe meals. The appetizers alone were huge!

From left to right: La Quercia prosciutto with fig mustard (delish!) and pecorino, asian style chicken wings, calamari

Mexican style shrimp cocktail

The shrimp cocktail was hands down my favorite – so flavorful and the chips were nice and seasoned.Β  I would go back for just this and a margarita at sunset anytime.

The entrees were also spot on. I think between us we ordered the steak frites, the braised short ribs (chef special), garlic shrimp and mahi mahi.

I choose the mahi mahi with gnocchi.

It looked better in person, I swear.

Loved the roasted grapes and mushrooms that accompanied it.

Of course, no Restaurant Week would be complete without dessert.

Sticky Toffy Pudding Cake

Caramel Apple Crisp, Chocolate Raspberry Layer Cake

If I was pressed to choose, I think the toffee pudding was my favorite. But they were all pretty darn delicious. I only wish we had more room to enjoy – I think we all had maybe a bite or two of each before we had to give in to our full stomachs.

All in all it was a great evening. Hopefully Adam and I will make our way to the zoo this weekend and his Dad and Stepmom are also coming down (rom L.A.) on Saturday to go out for dinner – so there will be more good eats on our horizon πŸ™‚

Also? I just realized I didn’t take any photos of the people – bad Drea! I will do better this weekend. I can’t help it – it’s my inner fat kid…I love to eat!

Feeling Frenchy

Happy Monday-after-a-Holiday weekend! Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and gobbled up plenty of turkey and stuffing.

I think San Diego didn’t get the memo that we’re nearing the end of November and thatΒ  December is rapidly approaching. Instead, we’re enjoying 85 degree days at the beach. No big deal.

Also not a big deal? These little suckers.

Just a quick little french pastry I whipped up and have been munching on for breakfast the past few days.

I am a horrible baker, and after trying unsuccesfully to bake cookies for the umpteenth time last week, I have completely abandoned any hope of every being one. But these I can handle. I used this recipe for petits pain au chocolat and I highly recommend it. It’s fool-proof AND you’ll feel all sort of sophisticated and frenchy while enjoying.

And now? I’m off to the beach.

Is It Just Me?

Or does today feel like the end of summer. Goodby August…goodbye summer?

I guess we still have labor day to get through… And let’s face it, I live in San Diego. I still have several weeks of beach time to enjoy before temperatures start plummeting (sometimes it gets down to the 40’s! Brrrr)

Some random beach shots from this weekend:

I think that's Adam's hand in the corner. Probably trying to help me off a big rock during our "hike." I'm extremely clumsy...

20110831-071602.jpg

It was a lovely afternoon. I even went into the water where I did not get swept away and knocked on my bum by two huge waves as Adam watched and laughed. Yep, it was a good day.

P.S. Shout out to Ang – Happy Birthday!!!!

Get Over It

The weekend is long gone. And the next one is still a few days away.

Grrrr.

But seriously, it’s hard to get over them when weekends represent this:

20110816-115307.jpg

Sunday. Beach.

That was, for a few moments, my view. Then the stupid flies/gnats/whatever-they-were hanging out in the beached Kelp wouldn’t leave Adam and I alone. And the sun wasn’t particularly cooperating.

Beach was abandoned with the hope of returning next weekend.

Alas.

But check it(!) – whilst trying to see a band/venue for Adam’s upcoming show this Wednesday (hint, hint: be there) I spied this in the bathroom:

Hard core punk, and stuff...

Coastal Gris is legit, yo.

But seriously, you should go. I’ll be there. Maybe I’ll buy you a beer. Who knows?

No Gloom Around These Parts

Today is Tuesday (Tuesday!) and my week is going pretty okay. Usually I’m pretty unhappy around these parts after a nice relaxing weekend and focused solely on counting down days until the weekend. But so far? Not too shabby.

Instead of this:

I’ve managed to keep it pretty even-keeled.

A quick aside – how uh-mazing has Real Housewives of New York been this season? I mentioned this the other day on facebook, but it’s worth re-stating – since when did Kelly become the voice of reason???

Anyway, I suppose the month of June has been quite lovely. I have a friend from law school in town tonight and have dinner plans to meet up (Daaaaaaaaaan!) and work has been pretty drama free. Bonus! I’ve also managed to get rid of 2 garbage bags of clothes to be donated. I’m feeling clutter free and fancy free πŸ™‚

Plus, this weekend I managed to spend some time at the beach (despite some major June gloom) and look what we chanced upon!

20110613-101356.jpg

Mussels! Alas, we did not take them home. But still…. kind of cool.

Also, I have discovered the most simple, easy, satisfying, 5-minute lunch EVAH. (Could I squeeze more adjectives in that sentence?)

Behold!

20110613-101555.jpg

Regular garden salad with cottage cheese. Delicious fix of veggies + protein in a cheap and fast fashion. (This took me 5 minutes to throw together in the morning. Please don’t tell me you don’t have time to pack a lunch in the morning) You should try this.

Tomorrow is Hump Day! Or as I like to refer to it – Wine Wednesday! Happy trails πŸ™‚

How’s your week going?

Please don’t be intimidated by my exciting life…

Instead of the Beach

We are getting baths around here.

Valentino is less than impressed. (But at least he’ll smell better!)

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Tell Me Something I Don’t Know

Happy first day of June!! I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I surely did. I’m sure I’ll post pics later in the week. But for now, I’m happy to be back in sunny San Diego. (Good riddance May and your “May gray“)

Last week, Dr. Beach released his annual list of the top 10 beaches in the U.S.. Coronado beach in San Diego was named #2 and had the distinction of being the ONLY beach on the west coast. (I’m not counting Hawaii.)

Hotel Del Coronado

Now, I love Coronado beach. In fact, it is my 2nd favorite beach in San Diego. (What up Windansea!?) But I can’t help but notice two things – 1) the list of beaches are almost exclusively from the East Coast and 2) Dr. Beach is from Florida…. do I sense some bias here? Perhaps. I haven’t spent that much time on the East Coast in my adult life, so maybe I’m just a little bitter that my beloved SoCal didn’t get mad props, yo. He does base his rankings on 50 different criteria, so maybe there’s something to it after all.

I suddenly have a desire to 1) watch Some Like It Hot and 2) get thyself to the beach. I’d love to venture over to Coronado, have a cocktail at the Del while getting my sun on….but come on:

Valentino and I give Windansea Beach two paws up!

I’ve got my own beach practically at my doorstep!

(You knew Some Like It Hot was Filmed at the Hotel Del, right?)
